Deep Overhead Squat – FMS

Exercise FeatureDeep Overhead Squat

A look at the Deep Overhead Squat as an assessment tool.

FMS Deep Overhead Squat

Alt Names: Deep Squat Test

Deep Squat assesses a range of stability and mobility issues

The first area of observation is.shoulder extension, shoulder girdle retraction and spinal extension required to move and hold the dowel in the overhead position. Knee flexion, ankle dorsiflexion and hip flexion are all assessed in achieving the deep squat position. Additionally screening for valgus collapse and other imbalances form part of the testing.

When performed correctly without any compensations the deep squat scores a 3.

In the case of failure heels are raised and the test repeated.  When performed correctly with compensation the movement scores a 2. Inability to perform the deep overhead squat scores a 1. Pain at any stage of the test scores 0.

Prescription of corrective exercises is based on observations.

Below is an example of the movement without any compensations.
