The Sport of Powerlifting

Novice Powerlifting competition BenchpressThe Sport of Powerlifting consists of three lifts:

  • Squat
  • Bench Press
  • Deadlift

 

For each lift you are given 3 attempts and your best legal attempt for each lift is combined to give a total score. There are 3 judges who will determine if an attempt is a legal lift.

Each powerlifting federation has differing rules for what is considered a legal lift, so it important to know the rules of your federation before competing.

Competitors are split into division based on weight and age.

Powerlifting Age Division usually include

Sub Junior
Junior
Open
Masters (several different levels)

Weight Divisions range from under 53 kg sub-juniors up to the over 120 kg divisions. Ladies weights range from Under 43 kg sub-juniors up to the over 84 kg division.

In Australia Powerlifting is governed by Powerlifting Australia Ltd. Powerlifting Australia is recognised by the Australian Sports Commission & the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency & is also the affiliate in Australia of the International Powerlifting Federation.
